Worthy club champion

On the Sid Valley Cycling Club competition front, 2007 was an outstanding year with personal bests for many riders throughout the year and there were also club records set at 10-, 25- and 50-mile TTs and in a 2-up 10.

On the competition front, 2007 was an outstanding year with personal bests for many riders throughout the year and there were also club records set at 10-, 25- and 50-mile TTs and in a 2-up 10.Many club members took part in various Audax events during the year, some doing at least five 100 kilometre rides.In addition, the club also promoted the sixth Rodney Pyne Memorial Hill Climb, the Richard Mallett 10 and the second cyclo-cross race at Escot, attracting one of the biggest fields in the SW league.One of the highlights of the year, the Mallet's Bash, was once again well-attended, raising a magnificent £5,072.93 for FORCEThe youth coaching sessions at Westpoint started well but sadly interest has waned and these are not set to continue in 2008. However, the club still had some good performances produced by the younger members throughout the season and therefore these riders were the first to receive their awards:Under-10s Girls' Champion Karla Hodson 2nd SW Ul0G Cyclo-Cross; Under 10s Boys' Champion Philip Clode; Under-12s Girls' Champion Laura Clode SW U12 Circuit Race Champ/SW U14G Cyclo-Cross Champ.On the road racing scene there was less competition due to the move of the Borrett brothers to another club, but Colin Tyrer obtained eight points during the season. However, the Road Race Champion, just obtaining the 25 points required to keep his 2nd cat licence, was Adrian Clode.During the year Sidmouth had numerous personal best rides. At 10 miles, in no particular order:Karl Hodson 21.43; Colin Tyrer 24.01; Martin Fullard 23.38; James Jackson 24.46; Philip Bennett 25.14; Colin Bennett 26.17; Robin Carter 29.54; Tom Challacombe 27.24; Andrew Seddon 28.43.At 25 miles: Adrian Clode 56.51; Karl Hodson 54.48. At 50 miles: Karl Hodson 1.56.24The top hill climb rider was James Jackson 6.16.In cyclo-cross there were a couple of new Sid Valley faces at the races in Steve Challoner and James Jackson but, in addition to winning the overall SW Vets Championship, Adrian Clode was also club Cyclo-Cross Champ.One of the highlights of the season was the performance of the Sid Valley team at the SW 50 mile TT champs where the club took the overall team prize with Douglas Parker, Adrian Clode and Karl Hodson. However, the outstanding performances at 10, 25 and 50 miles were all produced by Karl Hodson, who led the winning team with a 1.56, which was good enough to take the overall SW champs and the SW Vets award and also created new club records at 10 miles, 21.43, and 25 miles, 54.48. All fantastic performances and Karl Hodson was a worthy winner of the club's 10-, 25- and 50-mile championships for 2007.
