A world-renowned choir and orchestra is to play a special concert at Sidmouth Parish Church.

The Wells Music Cathedral School Chamber Choir and String Chamber Orchestra, directed by Nigel Perrin and Matthew Souter will play on Friday, July 1 at 7.30pm.

They will play pieces by Mozart, Elgin, Barber’s ‘Adagio for Strings’ and other famous music.

The orchestra was established in the early 1970s and is today recognised both nationally and internationally as a young ensemble of excellence, with many former members now distinguished professionals with top ensembles across the country.

Wells Cathedral School Chamber Choir is an elite group of senior singers led by Nigel Perrin, an internationally renowned choral director.

He recently celebrated 20 years as musical director of the City of Bath Bach Choir and directs Exeter Festival Chorus, having started his musical career singing at King’s College, Cambridge.

Matthew Souter was the principal viola position in the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at just 22 years of age, and has performed across the world as a soloist, including with the English Chamber Orchestra and The London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Originally a violinist at Wells Cathedral school back in the 1970`s, he returned in 2008 to head the string programme and prepare the young musicians for a profession he knows so well.

The orchestra are fresh from a tour to China and a recent performance at the Cheltenham Music Festival, and promises to be a fine evening of music and singing.
