Derek Schofield receives Gold Badge of English Folk Dance and Song Society at FolkWeek concert
ONE of the lynch-pins of Sidmouth FolkWeek, Derek Schofield, was awarded the Gold Badge of the English Folk Dance and Song Society at Monday’s Ham Marquee concert featuring Blue Murder.
Eliza Carthy, daughter of the festival patron Martin Carthy, and vice-president of EFDSS, made the presentation.
The Gold Badge is awarded for distinguished and unique service to folk music, dance and song and the work of the EFDSS.
Past recipients include Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson and Eliza Carthy, as well as former Sidmouth Festival Directors, Nibs Matthews, Bill Rutter and Steve Heap.
Derek Schofield received the Gold Badge at the Blue Murder concert in the Ham Marquee on Monday evening.
Derek is a former Arena Director at the Sidmouth Festival who also wrote the history of the Sidmouth Festival The First Week in August, in 2004.
He is a past board member of the EFDSS, was chairman of the Society’s Vaughan Williams Memorial Library advisory committee for 20 years, and has produced several archival CDs for the EFDSS and other record labels.
He is now editor of the EFDSS’s magazine English Dance and Song magazine.
The citation was written and read by Ian Russell, Director of the Elphinstone Institute, Aberdeen.
