A beloved comedy troupe is debuting its sell-out new show at the Manor Pavilion next week before the cabaret chaos hits a famous London stage - and the Herald is offering the last pair of tickets to a lucky reader.

Slightly Fat Features is riding a wave of renewed interest in variety shows, packing circus skills, comedy, magic, music, record breaking – and even a spot of wing walking – into a 75-minute performance.

Goronwy Thom is its Sidmouth link, and recently becoming a dad for the second time means he wants to do more shows in the town.

“Hopefully it’s the beginning of doing more shows here,” said the town resident of nine years.

“The support for the shows is still there, even after 10 years – there’s always been the appetite to see something a bit different.”

Variety shows used to be the norm across the country, but with the growth of cinema and television their popularity waned.

Slightly Fat Features are enjoying a resurgence sparked by Britain’s Got Talent.

The producers have practically begged them to appear for the last five years, and it could give them great publicity, but Goronwy has his doubts.

“This is our sixth year of saying no,” he said. “Sometimes it gets tempting, but it’s never as simple as that. We don’t want to end up losing to a dog!”

Goronwy and the guys used to do four shows-a-year at the Manor Pavilion, but Sidmouth has been a victim of their success – they have been jetting off to performances in Canada, Edinburgh and around Europe. Goronwy sometimes goes it alone with solo shows on cruise ships.

The troupe’s act was named the best at the Great York Fringe and they have enjoyed successful runs in the West End.

Their latest show is destined for a four-day run at Camden’s Roundhouse, but the loyal Sidmouth audience will have the first chance to see it next Saturday (November 21).

It promises to be ‘a good laugh for a dark November evening’ – and it looks set to be another sell-out.

For anyone who misses out, Slightly Fat Features will be back at the Manor Pavilion on March 4 and May 21. Tickets are on sale now.
