Sidmouth’s literary connections have been collated in a new booklet launched at the Sun, Sea & Books festival last week.
With contributions from local people, Sidmouth Museum curator Dr Nigel Hyman wrote of Jane Austen’s romantic attachment to the town, how Elizabeth Barrett was lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea, and of JRR Tolkien finding inspiration to continue writing his Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The colourful 48-page booklet Sidmouth’s Literary Connections is for sale for £2.50 at Sidmouth Museum.
The Sun, Sea & Books festival was awarded £630 from the Sid Vale Association’s Keith Owen Fund. Festival secretary Diana Bowerman said they could not have staged a poetry competition without it.
