Holocaust Memorial Day will be marked in Exeter on Sunday, when The Lord Mayor, Councillor Hazel Slack, will open a Holocaust Exhibition at the Guildhall, at 2pm.

The exhibition is mounted as a commemoration of terrible acts which have been perpetrated against races and ethnic groups, with an invitation to "imagine the unimaginable" atrocities which man continues to commit against his fellow man.

The exhibition traces the history, the victims and the survivors of the Holocaust in Nazi-dominated Europe during the Second World War, and features also some of the later genocide in other nations, with testimonies from those involved. Groups striving against prejudice in today's society will also be featured in the display.

There will be DVD loops, books to view and a quiet corner in which to reflect, light a candle, and perhaps record one's own thoughts. Exeter City Council's Book of Remembrance will be open for signature, inviting all to unite in common purpose.

Dr Paul Newgass, president of Exeter Synagogue, said: "Memorial Day is a national and international commemoration of the Holocaust, and of genocides in the wider world.

"Our event in Exeter is a truly communal undertaking. Sponsorship of the day is shared between the Exeter Interfaith Group, Exeter City Council, Devon County Council and SACRE, but many other schools, groups and individuals have contributed."

The Guildhall will be open from 1.30pm. There will be readings and prayers at 3.30pm, followed by lighting of candles and a period of silence, before the exhibition closes at 4pm.
