For those with a taste for the more traditional side of folk, the lunchtime sessions at The Volunteer during Sidmouth FolkWeek were a must. A rainy lunchtime on Monday, August 1 was a chance to have a pint and listen to a wide variety of unaccompanied traditional songs. The session gave an opportunity for singers of all abilities to share and learn new material.

Later on – at the Ham Marquee – Anna and Elizabeth gave a performance of songs in the American mountain tradition to an accompaniment of Sidmouth’s drumming rain and seagull cries. The duo entertained with a ‘shadow show’ and songs from Virginia, Vermont and New England.

The second half of the concert featured Nancy Kerr and James Fagan. The duo played traditional songs and tunes from England and Australia, including the appropriate Hey Rain! Highights included I Am The Fox, one of their own compositions from Nancy’s new album, Instar.
