Sidmouth’s new-look library opens its doors to the public after major renovations on Wednesday (October 23).

The refurbished reading hub’s book stock has been boosted, and its layout has been redesigned and made more flexible for a variety of activities for all ages.

The children’s library has been moved from the mezzanine floor to ground level, the teen zone has been made more attractive and there is a dedicated quiet reading and studying area.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s (DCC) cabinet member for communities, said: “This refurbishment will create an improved space with a brighter look and feel which will broaden the library’s appeal, not only for existing users, but also for the wider community.

“Where we have invested already in our libraries and now provide a wider range of services of interest to local people, library membership figures have risen, and I’m sure this revamp will turn Sidmouth Library into a modern and flexible facility that is fit for the changing needs of the community and that everyone wants to use and can be proud of.”

Cllr Stuart Hughes, DCC’s Sidmouth representative, added: “I’ve been looking forward to seeing the transformation of the library into one fit for the 21st century, and I’m sure visitor numbers next week will be through the roof with people wanting to see the improvements.

“I’m confident that it will attract even greater usage by people of all ages.”

The library has been closed for five weeks during the renovations. It will reopen at 9am.

Anyone who cannot wait to see the improvements at Blackmore Drive can go to a preview afternoon from 2pm until 4pm on Tuesday. Refreshments will be available.
