Tickets for Sidmouth Youth Theatre's production of West Side Story at The Manor Pavilion will soon be moving location to the venue.
As of Saturday, January 16, tickets will be on sale at the Manor Pavilion Theatre box office, having been at the Tasty Baguette, where they will remain until the end of today (Friday).
Don’t miss the opportunity to see 80 young people who have rehearsed long and hard to perform this challenging and iconic musical with skill and enthusiasm.
Based upon Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the immortal story of star-crossed lovers is transformed and set in a turf war of rival ethnic gangs. This landmark musical bravely addresses dark social issues that are as relevant today as when the musical first took to the stage in 1957.
While written more than 50 years ago, the issues expressed in West Side Story - racism, prejudice, anti-immigration and inequality – remain and are particularly relevant today.
With a full pit band supporting the performers as they tackle iconic songs, bringing the music of Leonard Bernstein to life, the company hope to create the reality of New York’s West Side with all its troubles and challenges.
Angela Davies, director and head of performing and creative arts at Sidmouth College, said: “We began rehearsing at the start of November and it has been a very fast train ride with a very focused and excited cast of young people.
“They have willingly given up many hours to perfect their roles and they have approached every challenge with commitment and energy.
“They have been a joy to work with and their resilience and perseverance will be rewarded with the support of the Sidmouth community. Thank you for sharing their work and they look forward to seeing you in the theatre.”
The production will be performed at the Manor Pavilion Theatre from Wednesday, February 3, until Saturday, February 6.
