The dreaded letter detailing another increase in my energy bills from April dropped through my letterbox in Sidmouth recently. I know it is a worrying time for many and I’ve received many emails and letters about bills in recent weeks.

Column by East Devon MP Simon Jupp.

We all know that food and energy costs have already risen over the last year – driven by the global aftershocks of Putin’s war in Ukraine.

At the moment, the government is limiting the typical household bill to £2,500 a year through the Energy Price Guarantee. That’s in addition to the £400 non-repayable government discount, paid in instalments to households from October 2022 to March 2023.

I have met with the Chancellor to discuss a range of issues, including the cost of living support and what more can be done to help those on lower incomes. The budget is coming up next Wednesday and I know the Chancellor heard the case I put forward.

It’s already been announced that there will be a £900 cash boost for means-tested benefits claimants, a separate £150 for over six million disabled people, and £300 for over eight million pensioners on top of their Winter Fuel Payments.

It has also been confirmed that from April, benefits and the State Pension will rise in line with inflation, ensuring they increase by over 10%. April will also see the biggest ever cash rise to the National Living Wage.

Those living in park homes – such as residents in Ringswell Park in Exeter – can now apply via a secure online portal to receive £400 under a scheme called the Energy Bill Support Scheme Alternative Funding.

Many residents in particularly rural parts of East Devon use heating oil or liquified petroleum gas to heat their homes. They told me the additional £100 initially announced some months ago wasn't enough. I made the case for an increase, which is now £200 that most should get automatically.

If you need advice about accessing the range of financial support from the government, email me at simon.jupp.mp@parliament.uk or get in touch by letter. I’ll do everything I can to help you.
