Steps leading to Sidmouth Cricket Club could be installed on the Esplanade, if plans are approved.

Application 23/2119/FUL proposes installing steps next to the retaining wall that supports the cricket field between the buildings cut into the higher level which were originally shelters with seating but have recently been converted to a fast food outlet, toilets/showers and a base for the surf life saving club.

The application states: "The proposal is to install a stainless steel stair to provide access up to the footpath surrounding the cricket field.

"This would be done with the minimum of alteration simply requiring the reduction in the height of the wall at the low point of the castellation.

"The stainless steel would be marine grade suitable for the environment and a similar material to that very recently used at the Red Wall walk adjacent to the river and at Jacobs ladder.

"The guarding would be in glass to allow the wall to still be seen, minimising the impact.

"Sidmouth Town Council has considered ways of improving access from the esplanade to the path surrounding the cricket field which would also allow the Sid Valley ring to use this as part of the route.

"Presently visitors and even some local residents find it difficult to find access to the path surrounding the cricket field which sits alongside the Bedford lawn car park.

"The site of the steps is within the principal holiday accommodation and town centre conservation area and the built-up area boundary.

"The proposed steps will have no negative effect on the surrounding properties or area, in fact the improved access should reflect positively on the surrounding area.

"The proposals will help to enhance the eastern end of the seafront by providing access to the cricket field which is not only used for cricket but hosts events such as the classic car show and is used as part of the folk festival and regatta and is incorporated in many walks around Sidmouth.

"The proposed steps would respect the significance and value of the wall and surrounding area and would be an asset to the community."
